Research Interests

Dr. Wafa Khalfan is interested in investigating sociopolitical changes through the lens of media and technology, across four interconnected strands:

  • Digital Media and ICTs: Emerging forms of digital journalism- Social media regulation – Algorithm analysis and ethics.
  • Political Economy of the Media: Commercialisation of public broadcasters and the role of journalism in highly-regulated contexts.
  • Culture: National identity – Globalisation and native communities – Analysis of media content.
  • Television Studies: TV Journalism – Local TV news – TV content analysis especially news and popular culture such as TV series.

International Collaboration

Dr. Wafa Khalfan is open to different collaborations but especially interested in identifying similarities and disparities between the Latin American and the Arab/ Middle Eastern contexts through empirical research (e.g. The use of social media for political change, native communities, media content analysis, etc)
